Here are before and after pictures of a pressed back golden oak chair. The cane had long ago been replaced by a stamped fiber seat. A furniture stripper had removed layers of original finish and paint. The chair was then knocked apart and all glue joints cleaned before gluing back together at which time a replacement spindle was installed. Then came the task of hand weaving a new cane seat.
This antique chair was suffering from many failed glue joints as well as some splitting wood. Joints were spread apart enough to clean out the old glue. Glue was then injected into the joints and splits before clamping back together. It took many clamps to hold everything together while the glue cured
This outdoor bench had one end which had rotted requiring replacement. The replacement was made from cypress using waterproof urethane glue.
A great example of a chair in need. Poorly done caning is not the only problem here. The seat boards are riddled with filled nail holes from something that had been nailed over the caned seat (probably something that was done when the original cane failed). All glue joints are failing. One stretcher was broken out and is missing as is one back spindle. The entire chair will be taken apart, new oak spindles turned and new seat boards made. Then the chair will be glued back together before hand weaving a new cane seat. After a finish is applied this chair will look as good as it did on the day it was first made.
After turning a new back spindle and front stretcher the chair was knocked apart. New seat boards were made and the chair was then reassembled and glued together. Then came the stain and finish. Finally a new seat was hand woven. A chair that I paid $2.50 for in a junk shop became a welcome addition to the dining room looking like the fine antique that it is.
